Hydrothermal Carbonization of Spent Coffee Grounds for Producing Solid Fuel

نویسندگان

چکیده

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are industrial biowaste resulting from the coffee-brewing process, and they often underutilized end up in landfills, thereby leading to emission of toxic gases environmental damage. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an attractive approach valorize wet biomass such as SCG valuable bioproducts (i.e., hydrochar). Thus, this work, HTC was carried out a 500 L stainless steel vessel at 150, 170, 190, 210, 230 °C for 30 min, 60 90 120 min feedstock water weight ratio 1:5, 1:10, 1:15, use hydrochar solid fuel evaluated. The results showed that high energy recovery (83.93%) HHV (23.54 MJ/kg) obtained moderate conditions (150 °C, 1:5) when compared with conventional approaches torrefaction. Following this, surface morphology, functionality, combustion behavior were characterized by SEM, FTIR, TGA, respectively. In short, it can be concluded effective producing has potential applied either domestic heating or large-scale co-firing plants.

Isolation of polyphenols from spent coffee grounds and silverskin by mild hydrothermal pretreatment.

In this study, a new method for isolation of polyphenols (PP) from spent coffee grounds (SCG) and coffee silverskin (CS) is described. The method consisted of a mild hydrothermal pretreatment at 120°C, for 20 min, using a liquid-to-solid ratio of 20 mL/g. PP (determined as gallic acid equivalents, GAE) were the most abundant components in the extracts produced by this method, corresponding to 3...

Conversion of Municipal Solid Wastes into Biochar through Hydrothermal Carbonization

In this study, the hydrothermal treatment of municipal solid wastes (MSWs) for the production of biochar as a renewable solid fuel was investigated. The properties of surrogate MSWs and mixtures of newspaper and vegetables were greatly improved by hydrothermal treatment and were similar to those of coal-like fuel substances. Hydrothermal treatment increased the calorific value, the fixed carbon...

Chemical, Functional, and Structural Properties of Spent Coffee Grounds and Coffee Silverskin

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) and coffee silverskin (CS) represent a great pollution hazard if discharged into the environment. Taking this fact into account, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, functional properties, and structural characteristics of these agroindustrial residues in order to identify the characteristics that allow their reutilization in industrial ...

Utilization of spent coffee grounds for isolation and stabilization of Paenibacillus chitinolyticus CKS1 cellulase by immobilization

This study has explored the feasibility of using spent coffee grounds as a good supporting material for the Paenibacillus chitinolyticus CKS1 cellulase immobilization. An optimal operational conditions in a batch-adsorption system were found to be: carrier mass of 12 g/L, under the temperature of 45 °C and no pH adjustments. The immobilization yield reached about 71%. An equilibrium establishme...
